24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week

Tiffany Shlain helped us explore how we can reclaim our presence, reset ourselves emotionally, and reconnect in a 24/7 digital world.

Screen technology, such as computers, smartphones, and television, is woven into the daily fabric of our lives. We wake up to our smartphone alarms, check our social media and e-mails, search the internet for research, shop online with next day delivery, attend seemingly never-ending video conference meetings, play video games, watch consecutive episodes of Netflix programs, become fans of YouTube stars, and the list goes on and on.

While technology has certainly helped us be more productive, expand our reach and connect with each other more, the constant tethering to technology has also had caused us to shorten our attention spans, inundated us with distractions, hampered our creativity, caused fatigue, and has ironically led to us feeling more disconnected from ourselves and each other. All of this is amplified when working virtually during COVID.

When we are frazzled, weary, distracted, and disconnected, we are less able to be emotionally agile to handle the demands of our lives and to feel fulfillment. Here lies the dilemma. Since technology is not going away, what are we to do? At our 2020 Conference, we sat down virtually with Emmy-nominated filmmaker and best-selling author, Tiffany Shlain and explored how we can reclaim our presence, reset ourselves emotionally, and reconnect in a 24/7 digital world.
